“The next wave in Latin-American jazz may well begin with Tosello." --Christopher Loudon, Jazz Times

Sometimes the best journey is the one that takes you back home.  Sofia Tosello has been singing almost her entire life, making her professional debut at age eight in her hometown of Cordoba, Argentina, and growing up on the sound of legends like Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie.

A quest to perform this music drew Sofia to New York City in 1999. Yet once in the Big Apple, something unexpected happened; playing with a variety Latin ensembles, she began to hear the music of her homeland in a brand new way. A return to the north of Argentina cemented her renewed interest in these folkloric traditions, as she reconnected with the beauty of her culture and its deep rhythms.

This awakening led Sofia to experiment with new musical blends, creating a big-city approach to tango that mixes in the rich variety of Latin American cancion traditions, like chacarera, bolero filin, vals, son and zamba, as well as shades of the downtown "world" jazz scene, and a bit of New York funk in Tosello's performances.  With the guitarra, contrabass and bombo leguero as her starting point, Tosello creates an original style, a personal vehicle that is honest, passionate, and full of beautiful stories.

Her latest album Tangolandó,  a collaboration with Peruvian guitarist Yuri Juárez, captures the entrancing power of this fusion , blending styles such as tango, milonga, lando, festejo, waltz in one unified and innovative sound (“some of the finest classics from Perú and Argentina find a brand new life on this record”Latin Jazz Network). With Tangolandó Sofia has performed throughout the country at venues like Lincoln Center (New York, NY), Philadelphia Museum of Art (Philadelphia, PA), Old Town School of Folk Music (Chicago, IL), and more.

Throughout the years Sofia has also developed a passion for educating. In 2011 and 2012 she was selected to teach vocal technique, jazz improvisation, music theory and Latin American rhythms and songs, at the renowned Swarnaboohmi Academy of Music in Chennai, India alongside elite musicians such Dafnis Prieto, Victor Wooten, Jason Lindner, and more. Sofia is now teaching privately in New York.

Sofia has also performed and recorded with talented and renown musicians such as, Grammy Winner Thalia, Grammy Nominee Pedro Giraudo Jazz Orchestra, Horacio 'El Negro' Hernandez , Guillermo Klein, Aquiles Baez, Yuri Juarez, and many, many more.
